Finally, a tech leader speaks practical truth, not hype, about AI.
Mark Russinovich offers a rare, balanced perspective on AI in software development in this recent GeekWire piece by Todd Bishop.
This is the most realistic take I’ve heard from a senior tech executive – though not surprising from Russinovich, still one of the industry’s strongest technologists.
This quote particularly resonates: “The future lies in AI-assisted coding, where AI helps developers write code but humans maintain oversight of architecture and complex decision-making.”
This aligns perfectly with what I’ve called “practical AI” for years – and what I’m seeing in the real world.
The industry needs more nuanced thinking like this. AI excels at specific tasks, struggles with others, and can’t solve everything. We should recognize and leverage its strengths while recognizing its limitations.
Case in point: I wrote this post, but used Anthropic‘s Claude to review and suggest edits. The thinking and final copy remain mine – that’s practical AI.
