This posting attempts to consolidate in one location information on where AI is being enabled by default and how to disable it for Microsoft applications. This information is provided on a best effort basis based on publicly available information and is current as of January 30, 2025. Please note that this information is fluid and subject to (silent) change as Microsoft continues to roll out Copilot and AI features enabled by default.
As of this writing, Copilot/AI features are being rolled out enabled by default in the following places:
- Windows 11
- Microsoft Paint
- Microsoft Edge
- Microsoft Office
1. Windows 11: Currently, the best, easiest way to disable Copilot in Windows 11 is to follow the instructions under “How to disable Copilot completely in Windows 11” in this article: https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/software/how-disable-copilot-in-windows-11.
2. Microsoft Paint: There is a Copilot-esque feature being introduced and enabled by default in the classic Microsoft Paint (mspaint). When it’s available, you’ll see it as “Image Creator”. Unfortunately, to disable this, you have to edit the registry. This article outlines how to do so: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable-cocreator-in-paint-app-in-windows-11.31056/.
I’ve seen reports that other AI features are present or coming to Paint but have not been able to confirm that nor find any way to disable them (if they exist).
3. Microsoft Edge: Disabling Copilot in Microsoft Edge can be done following “Method 2: Deactivate Microsoft Copilot on Your Edge Browser” in this article: https://www.technipages.com/3-ways-to-deactivate-microsoft-copilot/.
4. Microsoft Office: Currently there is only the ability to disable Copilot in Microsoft Word, there is no configurable option for any other Office application. To disable in Word follow the instructions located here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-turn-off-copilot-in-microsoft-365-family-and-personal-subscriptions-bc7e530b-152d-4123-8e78-edc06f8b85f1
However, a better approach likely is to use the privacy settings for “Connected Experiences” to universally disable this in Office. In fact, I have found this is effective at preventing Copilot from being enabled by default. Follow the instructions under “Change your privacy settings to turn off Copilot” in the above linked article.
5. LinkedIn: Currently, there is no way to turn off AI features in LinkedIn IF you’re a premium user. However, if you aren’t a premium user, those features aren’t available to you. An easy way to disable AI in LinkedIn then is, frankly, not to be a premium user.
However, all users’ information can be used by LinkedIn for AI training. In the US at least, this has been enabled by default. You can disable this setting as outlined here: https://mashable.com/article/linkedin-generative-ai-training-turn-off.
